Hornby Buildings

After much speculation one of the most distinctive buildings in the town has finally yielded to the demolition team. Hornby Buildings in The Rock was built in 1933 to a very distinctive Art Deco style of the period. It was an ambitious enterprise for a local authority and proudly bore the Coat of Arms of the Borough. It was named in honour of the Hornby family, who had close associations with the town, the Rector of Bury at the time being the Right Reverend H.L. Hornby, who held the position for 23 years until 1953. There were, no doubt, regrets at the passing of the old building for this has been a busy shopping area since Victorian times.
