Kay MemorialIn 1903 there was a meeting in the Co-op Hall in Knowsley Street, Bury to consider the erection of a memorial to John Kay, the Bury-born inventor of the Flying Shuttle. The memorial was subsequently constructed in a garden area formerly the indoor market and now known as Kay Gardens. It houses a valuable collection of paintings which had been owned by local industrialist Thomas Wrigley. It was a condition of the gift of these to the town that the works should always be kept apart from others and the building contains dedicated 'Wrigley' Galleries. John Gorell Haworth, together with his aunt Nancy Haworth proposed that an Anglican Church be built at Walshaw in his memory. Rev. Haworth had established a Sunday School in the village in 1847, but was now the vicar of a parish in Rossendale. The Jesse Haworth Memorial Church was subsequently built, and was consecrated in 1889. height 600width 600orientation 1camerasoftware Adobe Photoshop CS2 originaldate 1/1/0001 6:00:00 AMWhitehead GardensThe local architectural firm of Maxwell and Tuke was responsible for designing a large number of buildings, the last of which was this Clock Tower which stands in gardens off Manchester Road, just south of the Town Hall. A South African War memorial depicting a victorious soldier stands in the same gardens. Journal Summer 2000 height 600width 600orientation 1camerasoftware Adobe Photoshop CS2 originaldate 1/1/0001 6:00:00 AMWorld War 2 Memorial Bury Parish ChurchAt the front of the Parish Church in the Market Place stands the town’s Cenotaph and War Memorial, but hidden away at the back of the Church in a small Garden of Remembrance is this Second World War Memorial. height 600width 600orientation 1camerasoftware Adobe Photoshop CS2 originaldate 1/1/0001 6:00:00 AMArts and Crafts Centren December 2004 the Arts and Crafts Centre ceased to be used as such and these activities moved to a new building at the junction of Haymarket Street and Angoulême Way. Over a hundred years of education came to an end in the Free Renaissance style building. It has now become the Lancashire Fusiliers' Regimental Museum. Journal Summer 2003 height 600width 600orientation 1camerasoftware Adobe Photoshop CS2 originaldate 1/1/0001 6:00:00 AMInterior, Bank Street Unitarian Church, 1967In 1969 this Church celebrated its 250th anniversary, but the year afterwards extensive dry rot was found and the building had to be demolished.. It was the third church to stand on the same site and the building which replaced it is a more modern construction. The actual site of the third Church is now Craig House. But after a few more exploratory digs during the next four years the site was infilled and returned to function as a back-street car park. Now once more the stones of the buttresses have been revealed. Journal Summer 1999 height 600width 600orientation 1camerasoftware Adobe Photoshop CS2 originaldate 1/1/0001 6:00:00 AMCentral Methodist ChurchDemolished on 28th October 1999, the Central Methodist Church in Union Street was built in 1815. It was erected primarily as a result of the zeal and determination of James Wrigley. He was a man of deep Christian commitment and dedicated much of his wealth to the building of the new Chapel.
